As the Volkswagen Sharan is starting to show its age, the Germans are trying to make it more appealing by adding a new range-topping model, powered by the same engine as the Golf GTD.

The 2.0-liter TDI mill generates 184 PS (181 HP) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque, at 1,750 rpm. It’s mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which comes as standard on this version, distributing the output to the 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

With a towing load of 2,400 kg (5,291 lbs) and total luggage capacity of up to 2,430 liters, the Volkswagen Sharan 2.0 TDI 184 PS has a feature that should come in handy to users who like to keep an eye on their horses in the trailer while on the road: a GoPro Hero 4 camera that works in conjunction with the Car-Net App Connect with MirrorLink on the Composition Media, Discover Media and Discover Pro infotainment systems.

The camera can be attached in the trailer using the specific accessories, but due to safety concerns, it will only transfer still images onto the infotainment’s screen, updated every five seconds. While standing still or driving at up to 5 km/h (3 mph), a continuous stream can be transmitted, and if no trailer is being towed behind the Sharan, then the camera can be used to monitor kids in the back seats.

Prices in Germany start from from €44,000 ($49,405). Volkswagen also offers a special Sharan Allstar model, which uses the same engine and gearbox combo, but adds additional equipment that includes the ACC automatic distance control, Front Assist area monitoring with City Emergency Braking, 3-zone automatic climate control, allergen filter, and sliding rear doors with power opening and closing, for €47,725 ($53,588).
