Few would argue that the BMW M4 is lacking in much, especially when it comes to its performance capabilities. But you don’t get to the position that the M4 is in by resting on your proverbial laurels.

So it only makes sense that the Bavarian automaker is working on freshening up its highly regarded performance coupe. Just what it has in store for us, though, we don’t quite know at this point.

Spied undergoing testing in its native habitat (that being Germany) are a pair of M4 prototypes – one in red, one in white. The red one appears to foreshadow a (light) facelift for the M4 altogether with minor tweaks to the lights, but it’s the white example that has captured our interest more.

Though still wearing camouflage, the white prototype appears to be wearing some components from the M4 GTS – but not all of them, and not the same ones as the Competition Sport edition recently introduced in Spain. It looks like it’s wearing staggered rolling stock – probably 19-inch wheels up front and 20” in the back – as well as a trunk-mounted lip spoiler, a front splitter, and a more sculpted hood.

Could this be our first look at a potential M4 CSL to slot in between the standard and GTS models? Will it get a bump in output to go with the extra go-fast bits on the outside? Or is BMW just testing out some optional equipment for its M Performance Parts catalog?

It may be a while before we find out, but we’re looking forward to seeing what the engineers from Munich have in store.
