Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division only just confirmed work on its F1-powered hypercar and it’s emerged that one enthusiast has already placed a cash deposit on the car.

Seeing people clamouring over such a car isn’t surprising but what is surprising is that this deposit, the first for the car, comes from Australia where the AMG hypercar won’t even be road-legal.

At the Paris Auto Show, AMG boss Tobias Moers told Motoring that the car will only be produced in left-hand drive, meaning it cannot be driven on public roads in Australia.

Despite that, Mercedes-Benz Australia’s senior manager for product and corporate communications David McCarthy confirmed that he had received a deposit for the car.

“We already have a cash deposit. I can’t tell you who it is or how much the customer paid, but it’s my understanding it’s the first paid deposit [for that car] in the world,” he said.

So far, it has been announced that the AMG hypercar will utilize the company’s Formula One hybrid powertrain. While the V6 F1 engine displaces 1.6-liters, it’s possible displacement will increase on the road car for improved reliability. Whatever the case, over 1,000 hp is inevitable.

With the impending Aston Martin Red Bull AM-RB 001, it’s safe to say that a new age of hybrid hypercars is approaching.
