General Motors is making the most of Volkswagen’s absence from the U.S. diesel market not just with its new models, but by focusing on former VW owners, too.
GM’s powertrain chief, Dan Nicholson, recently told Automotive News that the American company has a good chance of attracting Volkswagen owners selling their diesel models back to the German firm, particularly thanks to GM’s new 1.6-liter diesel.
According to Nicholson, “There are a lot of diesel intenders and diesel-loyal people who are looking for a brand and vehicles to go after.”
Next year, the Chevrolet Equinox will be offered with a diesel engine for the very first time and for the 2017 model year, Cruze sedan customers will also have the option of a fuel-efficient diesel. Last but not least, a diesel Cruze hatchback is said to be in the works.
Dave Sullivan, an analyst with AutoPacific thinks that dieselgate has eroded consumer’s trust in Volkswagen and that for the first time, they’re willing to look elsewhere for their diesel needs.
“Eighteen months ago, I would have said no, VW buyers would not consider switching. But that tide has turned. The Equinox diesel plays in the only white space of the segment that seems to be left. Toyota and Nissan have competing hybrids in the segment. The diesel is a different direction.”
