Don’t let your eyes fool you; what you’re seeing is Bentley’s next generation Flying Spur being tested on public roads using a Panamera body as a very convenient camouflage.
It’s no secret that Bentley is going to build the new Flying Spur and the Continental models upon the Group VW’s modular MSB platform which debuted in the latest Porsche Panamera.
A quick check on the UK plates of this prototype with the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) reveal that this test mule is indeed registered as a Bentley powered by a 4.0-litre petrol engine.
That would be the also new twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 unit that debuted in the Panamera as well, but for Bentley it’s expected to receive a different calibration. Range-topping models are going to be powered by the latest twin-turbo 6.0-litre W12 engine found in the Bentayga.
The Flying Spur is basically the four-door version of the Continental GT, which has been spied both in coupe and in convertible forms, and since the latter is expected to be influenced by Bentley’s EXP10 Speed Six concept, it’s only natural to assume that the same treatment is reserved for the Flying Spur.
Bentley is probably going to reveal a prototype of the new Flying Spur some time in 2017, with the actual production model to hit the market in late 2018 or early 2019.
