McLaren Applied Technologies has been confirmed as the sole battery supplier for the fifth and sixth seasons of the Formula E Championship.
The British-based technology company put in a tender to the FIA some months ago alongside the likes of Porsche, Williams Advanced Engineering, Renault, Mahindra, Red Bull, Panasonic, DS and SAFT. After a detailed analysis of all the applications with independent electrical engineering evaluators, McLaren was awarded the tender.
The new batteries to be used in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons will have a maximum power output of 250 kW, a figure expected to be restricted to qualifying trim. During the races, the batteries will deliver 220 kW.
Although McLaren will supply the batteries, it’s yet to be confirmed if they’ll actually be allowed to brand them or if instead, the FIA won’t grant them any marketing rights.
Commenting on the news, motorsport director of McLaren Applied Technologies, Rodi Basso, said: “We’re delighted McLaren has been chosen by the FIA to be the sole supplier of batteries to Formula E from 2018 to 2020. Our new battery will almost double the energy storage, eliminating the need for drivers to swap cars during a race.
“As well as providing a global showcase for our sustainable technologies, this win provides another example of McLaren Applied Technologies’ vision to work closely with series partners to do our bit to help make the fan experience quicker and slicker.”
