Nissan is preparing to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its 1991 Bathurst 1000 victory at this weekend’s race at Australia’s Mount Panorama.
The Nissan NISMO Altima Supercar to be raced by Dean Fiore and Michael Caruso has been adorned in the same blue, white and red livery used by the Nissan GT-R R32 that stormed to victory at the famous race 25 years ago.
The 1991 Bathurst 1000 victory of Mark Skaife and Jim Richards has gone down in Australian folklore for the way they dominated the race. The GT-R was so quick that it completed the 1000 km race in just 6 hours, 19 minutes and 14.8 seconds, a record which remained untouched for 19 years.
Reminiscing on the victory, Skaife said “To win my first Bathurst with a legend like Jim Richards in the Nissan GT-R was just fantastic. It was a life changing moment to win the biggest car race in this part of the world. The 1991 race was fantastic because we could press on all day. It was the fastest race in history at the time and it was just a faultless day by not only the team, but the way the car ran.”
Heading into this weekend’s race, the duo of Jaime Whincup and Paul Dumbrell are odds on favorite to take the victory with their Triple Eight Race Engineering Holden Commodore.
