It seems that after missing out on Sergio Perez, Renault F1 is now poised to sign German driver Nico Hulkenberg on a two-year deal starting next season.

According to Autosport, the deal will include an option for a third season and the contract is meant to be signed before the next race will take place in the US.

Renault missed out on both Perez as well as Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz Jr recently, though seen as how talented Hulkenberg is generally thought of being, the French outfit might actually end up signing the best driver of the three.

One issue though is that Hulkenberg is currently under contract with Force India for next season, and while there is believed to be an escape clause, the parties concerned are still working on interpreting it.

Renault also think that having an experienced driver like Hulkenberg can be crucial for them next season, especially after a difficult first year back as a works team. As for Hulkenberg, Renault’s massive resources could prove vital in helping him compete for a title sometime in the future – which is something that might prove more difficult with a customer team like Force India.

Since making his debut back in 2010, the 27-year old driver has made 111 Formula 1 starts. He currently sits 9th overall in the 2016 Driver Standings, trailing his teammate Sergio Perez by 26 points.
