Sebastien Ogier’s dominance of the World Rally Championship continues following the Frenchmen’s fourth consecutive world driver’s title.
Ogier sealed his championship win at the Rally de Espana on Sunday afternoon where he won the event by 15.6 seconds piloting the potent Volkswagen Polo R WRC, beating local hero Dani Sordo in the Hyundai.
Discussing his win, Ogier said “It’s fantastic to take the championship two rallies before the end of the season, I couldn’t do much more. I had so much fun behind the steering wheel this weekend. Joining the list of big names who are four-time title winners is just amazing.”
In the 11 rallies held so far this season, Ogier has claimed victory in five, making him one of just two drivers with multiple victories in 2016. Thanks to further wins by teammates Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen, the Volkswagen Motorsport team is comfortably leading the race for the manufacturer’s championship.
Curiously, Ogier’s fourth straight title means the last time a WRC driver not named Sebastien won the championship was way back in 2003 with Petter Solberg. For the following nine seasons, Sebastien Loeb won the title each and every time and since his retirement, Ogier has taken the throne.
