As Volkswagen looks to increase its profit margins, it has emerged that the upcoming facelifted VW Golf, due to arrive next month, won’t be offered in the same number of variants as currently offered.
While speaking with Autocar, company boss Herbet Diess said that in order for the company to improve its cost-effectiveness, some Golf derivatives will get the axe.
“We need to simplify the product offering of the next Golf and have fewer variants, because we have got to get more cost-effectiveness into our company. We need to be more agile and more innovative, and this is one example,” he said.
Although no word has been given about which variant or variants will be culled, there’s a strong possibility the Golf convertible could face the axe.
Beyond reducing the number of bodystyles, there’s a possibility that the carmaker will reduce the number of powertrains on offer and place increased emphasis on the selection of hybrids believed to be in the works.
With that being said, there’s a possibility that two new 1.5-liter four-cylinder engines will be offered, as will a small 1.0-liter three-cylinder. These three engines will launch as VW starts building engines based around a uniform cylinder capacity of 500 cc.
