Alfa Romeo has celebrated the British launch of the Giulia in a rather curious way, taking the Quadrifoglio model to Silverstone to set a ‘blindfolded’ lap record.

To set the lap, two Giulia Quadrifoglios were used. The first had its windows covered in black vinyl while the second one then followed closely behind and instructions were given to the lead driver, Ed Morris, the youngest Briton to race at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

At the end of two days of practicing, a best time of 1:44.3 was set. While far from an outright lap record, it did match the 1:44 set by F1 driver Nino Farina 65 years ago in the British Grand Prix which at the time, was a lap record.

Discussing the stunt, Morris said “I’ve driven hundreds of cars but never one with all the windows blacked out. As a racing driver it’s in your nature to push yourself and the car to its limits and knowing the Alfa Romeo Giulia is packed with so many high-performance technologies really allowed us to have complete trust in it and focus on setting a record.”

We’re not entirely convinced that Alfa Romeo will attract any customers with this ‘record’ because after all, the Giulia Quadrifoglio speaks for itself.

It is the fastest production sedan around the legendary Nurburgring having lapped the circuit in just 7 minutes and 32 seconds in September, putting it ahead of the new Porsche Panamera Turbo. Helping to make the model so fast is its twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 engine delivering 503 hp, a perfect 50/50 weight distribution and torque vectoring.
