A previous report pointed towards a facelifted BMW i3 family for next year, but now a new one sends the ball further down the field.

Tweaked styling, improved range, and possible technology updates won’t be the only things the Germans plan for the revamped i3, as it could also gain a range-topping model, Autocar writes citing an inside source.

The vehicle, which will allegedly bear the “S” suffix, could become the first proper electric hot hatch and it’s believed to be able of similar performance as the Ford Fiesta ST or Renault Clio RS. This will be made possible by an more powerful version of the rear-mounted electric motor.

However, it remains unknown at this point whether BMW will choose to offer a beefed up body kit and interior modifications to set it apart furthermore, or keep it similar to the rest of the lineup.

The facelifted i3 is expected to make its world premiere next September at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, but it remains to be seen if the hotter version will join it or if it’s scheduled for a later launch.
