Since Buick is a big thing in China, the General Motors brand is getting ready for the 2016 Guangzhou Auto Show with a special concept.
The leaked study announces an electric car dedicated exclusively to the People Republic’s market, which, according to a Chinese media outlet, will be powered by GM’s latest generation PHEV plug-in hybrid – probably the same electrically aided 1.5-liter petrol engine delivering 99 hp found on the Chevrolet Volt.
Called Velite, the prototype appears to have more in common with Opel/Vauxhall’s Astra model than the Volt when it comes to design, sporting complex, chiseled lines towards the rear. Its doors appear to be frameless and rear hinged – opening in opposite directions – since there’s no visible B-pillar.
It’s unknown whether or not the Velite actually previews the production-spec variant since the latter is expected to be a rebadged Volt, but according to GM the concept will provide a template for upcoming Buick Blue models.
Although we now know what Buick is prepping for the Chinese Auto Show, we’ll still have to wait until the production vehicle’s debut – scheduled to debut in 2017 – to find out more about it.
