When it comes to small engines, some manufacturers focus on extracting performance, others on fuel economy, with a rare few even excelling at both.

To regular car buyers, this issue probably doesn’t get talked about enough – though you’d think that it would with so many people purchasing run-of-the-mill hatchbacks or eco-sedans.

What we have here then is a list put together by Carwow, which we find pretty accurate overall, except for the rankings which can be of course rather subjective.

There are arguments as to why each engine was chosen, though in the end it all comes down to personal choice and experience. Is, for example VW’s 1.4 TSI, which has received not a few awards in the past, really better value than BMW‘s 1.5-liter turbo petrol?

What’s certain is that the “small capacity engine landscape” has changed drastically compared to, say, five years ago, and customers looking to buy entry-level models rarely need to settle for poor performance anymore.
