General Motors congratulated both candidates and their parties today on their hard-fought campaigns, before announcing initiatives to strengthen production output at key US manufacturing operations.
The automaker reacted quickly following the results of yesterday’s election, which saw Republican nominee Donald Trump become the 45th president of the United States.
“GM looks forward to working with President-elect Donald J Trump and the new Congress on policies that support a strong and competitive US manufacturing base. GM will continue to do its part to transform the future of mobility and contribute to America’s competitive strength.”
Before the election, Trump was on record saying that he didn’t support GM’s plans to invest $5 billion in Mexico, though the automaker did make a more recent pledge to build new models at US factories as a way to generate new jobs.
As for their initiatives announced today, the plans include investing more than $900 million in three facilities – Toledo Transmission Operations in Ohio, Lansing Grand River in Michigan and Bedford Casting Operations in Indiana.
Plans are also in motion to align production output with demand for cars built at the Lordstown and Lansing Grand River assembly plants. The third shift of production at both of these facilities in the first quarter of 2017 will be suspended due to customers shifting their interest from cars to crossovers and trucks.
