If Mercedes is looking to rival the likes of the BMW i3 or even the Tesla Model 3, they’ll definitely need to build some type of compact car on their new modular architecture, exclusive to the EQ sub-brand.
One solution would be to go with a simple all-electric compact hatchback, much like the one rendered here by RM Design, borrowing heavily from the Generation EQ Concept in terms of visuals.
The 5-door hatchback segment is certainly one of the most popular world-wide and it’s only a matter of time before we see more dedicated electric models.
In terms of aesthetics, while we can’t see the front-end of this drawing, it’s safe to assume that a real-world version would stay faithful to all future Gen-EQ electric models, which will have a distinguishing Black Panel front grille with a white illuminated Mercedes star as a design feature.
As for power, in order to make a compact EV as budget-friendly as possible, Mercedes would probably need to cut back on the EQ Concept’s 402 HP and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) powertrain. Still, hitting 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 5 seconds would make this thing stand out even among the hottest of hot hatchbacks.
