In its mission to motorize post-war Italy, the Vespa became as iconic as the Fiat 500. It also evolved with the times, even if in recent years it fell a little behind.
That’s why the Italian company finally decided to bring it to modern standards, with visions of electrifying the scooter after 70 years of running it on fossil fuels.
Piaggio recently announced that they’re currently developing a new electric motor for the stylish and beloved brand, assuring us that the finished product will retain all the features that made the Vespa so successful.
In Piaggio’s own words, it will be a “perfect mix of excitement, technology and environmental friendliness that only Vespa can create”, and it will also offer innovative connectivity solutions.
Expected to debut in the second half of 2017, the Vespa Elettrica handle will face a lot of competition in the segment – as the electric scooter niche is continuously expanding. Still, thanks to Piaggio’s heritage (and style) it will undoubtedly be a hit. Better late than never, right?
