Ever since we were kids, we dreamt of reliving Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The trouble is that, while most any classic, red Italian roadster would likely do, if we were really going to go for it, we’d need a Ferrari 250 GT California Spider. And those are hard to come by – but there’s one coming up for auction.
The example in question is a 1960 short-wheelbase model, without the sought-after covered headlights of the movie car, mind you – but then again, the prop used in the film was a replica. And good thing it was, too, given the film’s dramatic, cringe-inducing climax.
The eleventh of just 54 made, chassis number 2277GT was the one that Ferrari displayed at the 1961 Brussels Motor Show. It remains in highly original condition – right down to its 3.0-liter V12 with triple Weber carbs rated at 240 horsepower and four-wheel disc brakes.
It’s set to cross the auction block on January 19th at Bonhams‘ upcoming sale in Scottsdale, Arizona. Given the prices which other examples have fetched recently, we wouldn’t be surprised to see this pristine example sell for, ten, twenty or even upwards of thirty million dollars. Fortunately those of us without that kind of scratch can still admire these photos captured by S. Clay for Bonhams.
