Apple Pay is a service mostly used to pay for, well, everyday things like groceries, gadgets, clothes and such, but the service could easily change its name to Apple CarPay, after someone used it to purchase – you guessed it, an automobile, and a very, very expensive one at that.
The unnamed man brought a classic Aston Martin DB5, which carried a price tag of £825,000, or just a little over $1 million. According to the British auction house Coys of Kensington, the purchase is the largest known in-app buy ever made, and it also broke another record, by becoming the first ever classic car sale completed via social media, using the Vero platform.
“The proud new owner saw the DB5 at the Paris Motor Show, he was overjoyed to see the car of his dreams and didn’t want to lose it… he was keen to quickly get in front of the queue, so a few days later he hit the ‘Buy Now’ button on Vero to guarantee the purchase, leaving two other collectors disappointed in his wake“, said COYS’ CEO, Chris Routledge.
The silver colored British sports car was built in 1964, and underwent a full restoration after being kept in dry storage for 20 years. During this time, the DB5 was not used at all, and this explains why its odometer indicates less than 60,000 miles (~96,500 km).
