Although the Volkswagen Group recently made the decision to quite both LMP1 endurance racing and the World Rally Championship, it is remaining open to the possibility of venturing further into electric motorsport.
Audi currently participates in the Formula E Championship and during discussions with Autocar at the Los Angeles Auto Show, VW’s sales and marketing boss Jurgen Stackmann said the company will keep a close eye of electric motorsport.
“The rally team exceeded all expectations by far and we have taken a decision to focus on the customer end of motorsport.
“We will see in the next years how we evolve, but I think there are some interesting aspects in electric motorsport. It’s a young scene, which might show opportunities in the years to come, but it is way too early to make a call on that one,” Stackmann said.
Earlier in the year, it is reported that Volkswagen expressed interest in an electric Rallycross championship, a series which has since been announced by Red Bull.
