Chevy has released its latest piece of racing equipment. Only this one isn’t made to go fast around corners. In fact it’s not made to go around corners at all, because this, as you can see, is a drag racer.
Revealed at the Performance Racing Industry show in Indianapolis today is the sixth-generation Chevrolet Pro Stock Camaro SS. It’s based on the same bones as the championship-winning fifth-generation drag racer, but upgraded to mirror the styling of the latest sixth-gen Camaro.
The Bowtie brand’s muscle car positively dominated this past season in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, winning 23 out of 24 events. One driver in particular – Jason Line – won eight of those events to win his third world title and Chevy’s third in a row.
That’s one heck of a precedent to follow. And to make sure it’s up to the task, Chevy will commence testing on the drag strip later this month before the new Camaro makes its competition debut in in February during the NHRA season opener in Pomona, California.
The Pro Stock category is one of five series orchestrated by the National Hot Rod Association, slotting in underneath the Top Fuel Dragster and Funny Car categories. Next year’s calendar includes 24 events, starting and ending in Pomona with races across the country in between from Arizona to New Hampshire.
