Mercedes-Benz looks set to take the thrown as the highest selling luxury automaker in the United States following a successful November.

BMW claimed the title in 2014 and 2015 but its rival has outsold it throughout the year and is currently leading the race by about 28,000 vehicles.

In November, Mercedes-Benz sold a total of 30,363 vehicles in the U.S., a 1.1 per cent increase and well ahead of the 26,289 units sold by BMW. Mercedes also beat Lexus in November with the luxury division of Toyota selling 29,050 units.

All up this year, Mercedes-Benz has sold 308,226 vehicles stateside, compared to the 290,046 of Lexus and the 280,339 of BMW.

According to Automotive News, a key reason for the success of Mercedes is that it offers a large range of SUVs at varying price brackets, giving customers ample options to enter the family of the three-pointed star.
