Mercedes is going to offer a new AMG E50 range-topping version of the new E-Class Coupe during the latter half of 2017.

The new model will be one of the first cars to get the company’s new M256 straight-six engine which is set to make its debut in the updated S-Class, Autocar reports.

The new engine will be a 3.0-litre petrol unit with a conventional turbo running along an electrically operated compressor and a 48v electrical system.

In its standard form, the new engine will produce 402hp but after a series of upgrades, including a higher boost pressure and internal modifications, the output is expected to rise to 450hp for the E50 Coupe.

The new E-Class Coupe was revealed yesterday, dressing the cutting-edge technologies seen in the regular E-Class in a sexy but familiar two-door coupe bodystyle. The new German coupe is set to make its public debut at the Detroit Auto Show this January.

As for the new range-topping AMG E50 4Matic version, this will be launched as part of the extensive celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the AMG brand next year.
