The hardest of hardcore off-roaders tend to stick around longer than other vehicles. Just look at the Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender, and Mercedes G-Wagen. But even these rough-and-tumble sport-utes have to acquiesce to modernity at some point, and now the winds of change have come calling for the Nissan Patrol Y61.

After nearly 20 years on the market in Australia, Nissan is finally putting the Y61 to pasture. But not before it gives the legendary off-roader one last swan song.

The Nissan Patrol Y61 Wagon Legend Edition is based on the tried-and true sport-utility, and packs a 3.0-liter turbodiesel four rated at 158 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. It drives all four of its 17-inch alloys through an honest-to-goodness two-speed transfer case, automatic locking hubs, and the buyer’s choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

Only 300 examples will be offered, each priced from $57,990. Then the Y61 will be retired for good, handing the torch to the newer (and larger) Y62 that some may know better as the Armada or Infiniti QX80 – just as Jeep, Land Rover, and Mercedes prepare to roll out new versions of their most iconic SUVs as well.
