In the market for a Dodge Viper? Well you can’t get one new anymore because the order books have closed, so you’ll have to get one second-hand.
But with so much muscle on tap, and (let’s be honest) build quality that may not have been the world’s finest in the first place, how can you trust that the previous owner has been responsible and honest about the vehicle’s history?
The bottom line is that you can never be 100 percent sure, but buying from a known entity could help. Like this 1997 model for sale on Bring A Trailer.
The vehicle pictured just happens to be owned by one Doug DeMuro, whose videos we’ve featured here many times. Doug bought the Viper less than a year ago from its second owner, the president of a local Viper owners’ club, who in turn bought it from the original owner in 2010.
It’s an original GTS coupe painted in signature cobalt blue with twin white racing stripes and a black leather interior – just the kind we had pinned up on our bedroom walls as kids.
The car is documented to be accident-free, but it does have some minor issues. There are some minor scrapes and scratches, the tailgate glass is separating from the hinges, the hood and passenger door are slightly misaligned and the interior, while in good condition, shows some signs of wear. Well, it’s 20 years old, after all. It’s been well maintained, though, and largely unmodified, with fresh rubber, battery, oil, and an upgraded radiator to keep it all running smoothly.
With 42,700 miles on the clock (1,200 of which were put on by DeMuro), there are five days left on the auction as we write these words and bidding currently stands at $26,001.
