The 300 SL Gullwing is probably the most iconic Mercedes-Benz of all time and a favorite among classic collectors, with properly maintained examples currently selling for seven-digit numbers.

The one pictured here is estimated to go for a more humble $125,000-$135,000 when it hits the auction block at the RMSothebys Santa Monica event in California this weekend.

And there is a good reason for that, as beneath its fiberglass body lies a 2002 Mercedes-Benz SLK 32 AMG, which was purchased from one of the brand’s dealers in Houston more than two years ago and molded into a 300 SL Gullwing replica.

The vendor says that its engine, automatic transmission, chassis and suspension are all original Mercedes-Benz parts and that the car has been properly tuned, with most of its bits and pieces being replaced during the transformation.

This replica has a grey exterior and a red leather interior equipped with a stereo system, air conditioning, power windows and cruise control. Its 3.2-liter V6 engine made by AMG delivers 349hp via an automatic transmission, which makes it quite potent, but would you be willing to pay a small fortune for it?
