Honda is actively considering giving the next NSX a full electric powertrain and no less than four electric motors.
Honda’s head of research and development Sekino Yosuke revealed the company’s intention of building an all-electric NSX to Autocar at the sidelines of the 1000hp 4-Motor Acura EV Concept demonstration event.
Bringing the four-motor electric powertrain of the EV racer to production could mean that the new NSX could offer breathtaking performance.
“The technology used on the Pikes Peak car could be interesting,” said Yosuke. “It’s not just a competition car; I would like to make such a car in production, and there are some studies around that.”
“We want our electric cars to be joyful to drive, and it is clear that this proposal, with around 1000bhp, is both joyful and uses technology that could one day reach production. We are evaluating what is possible now.”
Honda raced the 4-Motor Acura EV Concept at the Pikes Peak last year, finishing third overall. The electric powertrain is based on the SH-AWD powertrain of the current production NSX and features an electric motor powering each wheel, with Honda claiming that this is the “world’s first supercar with four-wheel independent torque allocation.”
This means that each wheel can accelerate or decelerate at any time and independently from what the other wheels are doing, improving the grip levels and optimizing the handling character of the car through proper torque vectoring.
If Honda does decide to make the next NSX a full-electric supercar though, this won’t happen before 2023, as the current model still has plenty of life left and more variants coming our way fast.
