Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular and it appears Subaru is getting ready to dip its toes into the segment.
According to Auto Express, Subaru is developing its first electric vehicle and plans on launching it in 2021.
Little is known about the vehicle at this point, but it will reportedly ride on the company’s Global Platform that currently underpins the Impreza. Rumors also suggest the EV will be based on an existing model in an effort to reduce costs. The car is still in the early stages of development, so there’s no word on performance specifications or its range. However, the report suggests it could come with all-wheel drive, as it’s one of the company’s defining attributes.
Besides creating an electric vehicle, the automaker is hard at work developing hybrid technology. The next-generation of hybrid models are set to arrive towards the end of 2018 and the powertrain will likely be offered on an assortment of different vehicles.
Subaru is also rumored to be working on a new generation of turbocharged boxer engines that will begin to arrive in 2019 and have smaller displacements than their predecessors.
