After renewing the entire E-Class lineup, Mercedes-Benz is now working on a new generation of the CLS, which will use the same underpinnings as the executive model.

The sexy-looking four-door coupe continues to be tested by engineers, with the latest prototypes captured on film on the roads near the Nurburgring, before being put through their paces on the famous German track.

Riding on the same platform as the rest of the E-Class family means that the new CLS will adopt some of their petrol and diesel engines. We could also see a plug-in hybrid variant, as well as a hybridized AMG version, which could be known as the CLS 53, slotting below the CLS 63 grade, and its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 lump.

An official reveal date has yet to be shared, but the new CLS could be presented during the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, in September, while the CLS 53 might debut in Los Angeles, two months later.
