Under the careful watch of the brand’s chief, Wolfgang Durheimer, and with the VW Group’s seal of approval, Bentley are now working on an entirely new version of the Bentayga: a plug-in hybrid.
Poised to join the family next year, as Autocar reports, the most eco-friendly version of the SUV will use a 3.0-liter supercharged V8 petrol engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack, a recipe similar to the one used on the Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid.
Expected to broaden the vehicle’s appeal, the Bentayga PHEV should account for a good chunk of sales in markets where stricter emissions limits are enforced.
On the outside, the plug-in hybrid SUV will remain identical to the twin-turbo diesel V8 and the W12 petrol variants, as an earlier scoop revealed, except for the charging port at the rear left quarter panel.
Bentley will allegedly launch the second generation Continental GT in 2018 before shipping the first units of the ‘green’ Bentayga to their customers. These might eventually be joined by a zero-emission car that was previewed by the EXP-10 Speed 6 concept more than two years ago.
