A resident of Jemez Springs, New Mexico, has been sentenced and forced to carry a photo of the 18-year-old he killed in a multi-vehicle car crash in August 2016.

Daniel Leigh Crane, aged 50, pleaded guilty to charges of homicide by vehicle in the second degree and was sentenced to two years probation with 60 days to serve in jail. Additionally, he must pay $1,140 in fines, a $420 fee for his defense attorney, cannot operate a vehicle in the state of Georgia, must complete 80 hours of community service and has to attend a victim impact panel.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the court’s decision, though, is that Crane will also be required to carry a photo of Summer Ann Lee, the 18-year-old who died in the crash, at all times, as well as a copy of the victim statement Lee’s mother presented at court.

On the morning of August 20, 2016, Crane struck Lee’s SUV and pushed it into five other cars. Lee later died as a result of her injuries, while seven other individuals were taken to hospital.

Speaking to the Henry Herald, Summer Ann Lee’s mother, Kim Lee, said she wanted Crane to apologize for his actions.

“In court he never apologized, not even for the wreck, but to never apologize for the life that was taken — that’s what we had a problem with. To not show any remorse is what has torn us apart,” she commented.
