While Richard Hammond may have escaped his high-speed Rimac Concept_One crash with little more than an injured knee, the same may not have been the case if Jeremy Clarkson or James May were behind the wheel, sources close to The Grand Tour claim.

During the crash, the all-electric hypercar rolled numerous times and came to a rest on its roof before bursting into flames. At just 5ft 7in, Hammond had enough headroom not to be injured by the rolls and was able to escape the wreckage before the fire.

Speaking to Driving, sources close to the Amazon show’s production team suggested that if Clarkson, standing at 6ft 5in, or May, at 6ft tall, were driving the car at the time of the crash, they may not have survived due to the low roofline of the car.

In an interview after the crash, Hammond admitted that the cockpit of the Concept_One is quite small.

“Even with me in it, with a helmet on … it’s a small car; it’s not massive. There’s only about that much [indicates around 1.5in above his head] clearance. Which means if it had collapsed by more than that, that’s my head,” the presenter said.

The segment, filmed in Switzerland and involving the Concept_One, Honda NSX and Lamborghini Aventador S, will be featured in the second season of The Grand Tour.
