Lewis Hamilton has claimed his fifth British Grand Prix victory and with it, slashed Sebastian Vettel’s championship wheel to just one point.
Starting from pole position after a blistering qualifying session, Hamilton had a trouble free race and was in first position for every single lap. While he had an easy race, many others further down the grid were involved in fierce battles in what proved to be one of the most exciting races of the season.
As the field got off the grid, Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel were engaged in a serious fight for third position. The two ultimately tangled and touched wheels at Stowe but despite Vettel’s best efforts, Verstappen managed to stay ahead.
After his failed attempt to move up the field, Vettel went for the undercut, stormed into the pits and ultimately jumped ahead of the flying Dutchman after his Red Bull Racing team took Ferrari’s bait and pitted the following lap.
While this was happening, Valtteri Bottas was screaming through the field and jumped from his ninth place grid position all the way to second when the chequered flag dropped. With just three laps remaining, Kimi Raikkonen’s third-place came under threat when he was forced to pit after his tire gave way.
Moments later, Sebastian Vettel dropped down from fourth place after his front left tire also exploded, making him limp back to the pits and ultimately coming home in seventh, scoring just 6 championship points.
