The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has requested another 2.7 million Takata airbag inflators be recalled in the United States.
The NHTSA conducted new tests on select inflators and discovered that those built from 2005 through 2012 may explode despite using calcium sulfate as a drying agent to apparently ensure their safety.
Vehicles affected by the additional recall have been manufactured by Nissan, Mazda and Ford but at this stage, no specific models have been identified in the recall.
Bloomberg reports that around 68 million Takata airbag inflators are already being recalled through 2019 as they may spray shards of metal when deployed. These inflators haven’t used the aforementioned drying agent and if safety agents discover that more inflators with the desiccants are also a risk, a further recall of some 130 million airbags worldwide could be triggered.
