Popular YouTuber Rob Dahm managed to break the half-mile speed record for rotary cars with his three-rotor Mazda RX-7. The highly modified Mazda managed to produce 835hp at the wheels on a dyno the week before and this was its first chance to prove its huge power out in the open.
Dahm was able to hit 177mph from a standing start, beating the previous record by 3mph and despite short-shifting in second, indicating that there’s probably more speed hiding in this rotary beast.
Getting this thing to work was far from easy, but eventually it was all worth it. And as a bonus, Dahm confesses that this car is actually a testbed for parts destined for his other build, that insane all-wheel drive four-rotor RX-7 we saw at the last SEMA show.
With Mazda still absent from the whole rotary thing, it’s great to see the Dorito enthusiasts keep building awesome cars.
