German publication Der Spiegel reports that Volkswagen’s French division reported false delivery figures for years in an effort to make its performances look better.

Citing an internal report from VW auditors, Der Spiegel discovered that many VW models were only registered by their owners months or years after taking delivery.

Additionally, the German company classified various cars as being delivered even though they didn’t have purchase contracts let alone had been delivered.

All up, it is reported that inaccurate information was given for almost 800,000 vehicles from Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat.

Reuters says that VW group chief executive Matthias Mueller was informed about the inaccurate delivery figures on April 24 and shortly after, the head of VW’s French operations Jacques Rivoal resigned, citing “strategic differences” with management.
