Mercedes-Benz will reveal the long-awaited, production-spec X-Class pickup truck on July 18 from Cape Town, South Africa and the event will be streamed in the video below.
Few details about the X-Class are known at this stage, other than the obvious fact that it will be inspired by the two concept cars unveiled in October last year. It’s unknown how closely the finished vehicle will resemble the concepts, in particular the road-oriented show car, but we think it should be quite similar and will adopt larger wing mirrors and ditch the peculiar, athletic-track shaped LED taillight.
Beyond its design, we do know that the X-Class will be based around the body-on-frame chassis currently used by the Nissan Navara and Renault Alaskan. Some Mercedes fans may cry foul at this point but the X-Class won’t just be dramatically different to its cousins but be unlike any other pickup on the market.
In terms of engines, a number and four- and six-cylinder options seem likely with rear-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive optional.
There’s a possibility the vehicle will come to the United States but it is far from a surety. What is confirmed is that it will be offered across Europe, Australia and South Africa.
