Having read all about the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE and seen it lapping the Nurburgring at extraordinary pace, it’s now time to find out what an experienced car reviewer like Matt Farah thinks of the new muscle car.

As if the ‘standard’ 650 hp ZL1 wasn’t enough, Chevrolet decided to create the 1LE package, turning it into a track animal and a proper rival to the almighty Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R.

Around General Motors’ 18-turn Milford Road Course test track, the 1LE is a remarkable three seconds faster than the standard coupe. Most of these performance gains come courtesy of the new aerodynamic components, including the front splitter and rear wing, as well as race-derived Multimatic DSSV dampers on all four corners.

Elsewhere, the ZL1 1LE has wider forged alloy wheels complemented by Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R tires. The 1LE also weighs 60 pounds (27 kg) less than a standard ZL1.

Thanks to all of the aero changes and brutal power, there’s no doubt that the ZL1 1LE is faster than a Shelby GT350R but is it as special to drive? Watch the video after the jump to find out. You might be surprised.
