If you look at the dozens upon dozens of concept cars rolling out each year and ponder which is the best among them, there’s an organization that can help you with that. It’s the International Automotive Media Registry, and every year it visits the Concours d’Elegance of America at St. John’s to hand out the North American Concept Vehicle of the Year awards.
This year marked the 16th edition of the awards, and they were handed out in three distinct categories: Production Preview Concepts, Concept Cars, and Concept Trucks.
The Jaguar I-Pace won in the first category, beating out the Infiniti QX50, Subaru Ascent, and Volkswagen Passat GT. This marks the third time that Jaguar has taken the category. The Concept Car award went to the Aston Martin for the first time for its Valkyrie concept, beating out the Cadillac Escala, Chrysler Portal, and Nissan V-motion 2.0. Finally the truck award was split between the Genesis GV80 and the VW I.D. Buzz, which tied to overshadow the Lincoln Navigator, and Toyota FT-4X.
With the highest score among the jurists, the I-Pace also took the Most Significant Concept Vehicle of 2017 prize over the Aston, the Genesis, and the Volkswagen, marking the second time Jaguar has taken the top prize back from the concours in Plymouth, Michigan. Last year’s top award, in case you’re wondering, went to the Buick Avista (alongside the Hyundai Ioniq and VW Budd-e). Before that the Ford GT won out over the Mercedes F 015 and Hyundai Santa Cruz.
At the same time, the 25th International Automotive Media Competition honored MotorWeek‘s 35th Anniversary Special, and former Car and Driver editor Csaba Csere was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
