Infiniti is set to reveal an all-electric concept at January’s Detroit Auto Show next year.
Autocar received word from company design boss Alfonso Albaisa that the concept will preview an electric vehicle set to hit the market in 2019. It won’t be an all-electric version of an existing model either. Instead, it will be all-new.
Although Nissan could have provided Infiniti with the platform from the 2018 Leaf, Albaisa says its first all-electric model will instead utilize a bespoke platform and share componentry with the Prototype 9 Concept from the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
Infiniti boss Roland Krueger revealed earlier in the year that the company has “lots of engineering competencies we can tap into and utilize [from Nissan].”
No details are known about the vehicle’s electric powertrain but it would make sense if it shared some components with the 2018 Leaf, even if it is based on a different platform. Likely crossover parts would be the Leaf’s 40-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and the hatchback’s 147 hp electric motor.
