Genesis says it has no intention of building a hatchback to slot below the new G70 sports sedan.

As it stands, Genesis rivals vehicles like the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4 with the G70, the 5-Series, E-Class and A6 with the G80 and the A8, S-Class and 7-Series with the large G90. However, the Korean automaker doesn’t have an answer for the smaller offerings of its German rivals, including the Audi A1 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

Speaking to Car Advice at the global launch of the G70 in South Korea, the firm’s senior vice president Manfred Fitzgerald said the Genesis family of cars is complete after being asked about a potential A-Class rival.

“I don’t want to comment on the moves of the others. We have a pretty clear strategy planned out with what we want to do. Therefore the sedan line-up is pretty complete with the G90, G80 and G70.

“The SUVs will follow. Now going lower than that, like the others are – I don’t think that is in our playbook. Other brands, due to their history and where they’re going from where they are, they might think otherwise,” Fitzgerald said.

Although Genesis doesn’t intend on building any smaller vehicles, Fitzgerald said he wouldn’t rule out a sleek grand tourer being added to the range in the future.
