Porsche has admitted that it is interested in returning to Formula One as an engine supplier as part of the proposed 2021 regulations.

During last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Porsche’s deputy chairman of the executive board and member of the board for finances and IT, Lutz Meschke, held talks with F1 bosses about the potential to return to the sport.

Speaking to Motorsport, Meschke said that the prospect of engines becoming cheaper and less complex for the 2021 F1 season have sparked the interest of the German automaker.

“F1 could be one of the right places. As you know Formula E is very important for us now, and F1 is always a good topic to think about. And I think we are in quite good discussions regarding the new engine…We have to cut costs in F1, and it’s a good way to reach this target,” he admitted.

Porsche hasn’t been involved in the sport since 1991 but F1’s commercial boss Sean Bratches said the carmaker would be welcomed back with open arms.

“Ultimately we’re trying to create a platform and environment where more engine manufacturers and brands and teams come into this sport and make it a compelling business proposition to do so.

“As the individual who kind of runs marketing and branding at F1 the inclusion of Porsche, which is a heritage racing brand in our sport, would be highly valued,” he said.
