We know that the latest-generation Ford Fiesta won’t be sold in the United States and now we’ve learnεδ that the automaker won’t even bring the hotted-up Fiesta ST stateside.
At the Frankfurt Motor Show, Ford Performance of Europe director Leo Roeks told CarBuzz that there simply isn’t enough interest for such a model in the United States.
“It’s simply a matter of a lack of interest in the B-segment in America. It doesn’t make sense, nor is it possible financially speaking, to import a single trim level, and a niche one at that,” he said.
As consumers in the U.S. customers continue to shift towards larger SUVs and crossovers, there’s simply not enough interest in a small city car. In fact, Ford didn’t even manage to sell 50,000 Fiestas in the U.S. last year, a tiny sum compared to the 200,000-odd Focus models that land in American homes annually.
For those markets fortunate enough to get the new Fiesta ST, the punchy hot hatch promises to be very, very good.
Under the skin, it is powered by a three-cylinder turbocharged engine with 197 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque, enough to accelerate the car to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.7 seconds.
