Scoop: 2019 Audi A1 Looks Larger And Wider Than Predecessor

Meet the next-generation Audi A1, a car expected to be more spacious and a lot more technologically advanced than its aging predecessor.

Underpinning the 2019 A1 is the MQB A0 platform, shared with other small hatchbacks from the VW Group such as the all-new Polo. This should result in a bigger wheelbase, but also improved structural rigidity thanks to the hot-formed steel and aluminum construction.

This new model will only be available as a 5-door Sportback version, with the 3-door getting cut from the roster due to poor sales.

Rumor has it that the all-new A1 will look like a smaller A3, which we’re starting to believe judging by what we’re seeing in these spy images. Viewing the car from a rear 3/4 angle makes it easy to spot the A3-like shoulder line.

On the tech front, expect the new A1 to get some of Audi’s latest systems such as some semi-autonomous tech, Wi-Fi hotspot, smartphone integration and perhaps even the 12.3″ TFT Virtual Cockpit display, as an optional extra.

Engine options will include both 3- and 4-cylinder petrol and diesel units, mated to either 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic transmissions. A hybrid model is also likely, positioned underneath the flagship all-wheel driven S1 version. Whether or not an RS1 is happening, remains unknown.

The 2019 Audi A1 should arrive in dealerships sometime next year, when it will look to lock horns with its old pal, the Mini.
