It appears as if the 2.0-liter turbo set to be available with the 2018 Jeep Wrangler won’t deliver 368 hp after all.

Just last week, a document submitted by FCA to the NHTSA revealed that the Wrangler’s small 2.0-liter would produce 368 hp. However, the carmaker has since amended these NHTSA filings, indicating that the horsepower level for the engine is NR (Not Rated).

Members of the JL Wrangler Forums believe there’s a possibility FCA may have made a mistake in the initial filing, perhaps even stating 368 hp accidentally, rather than a more reasonable figure like 268 hp.

In hindsight, the 368 hp figure quoted by FCA always seemed a little farfetched. If true, that would make the 2.0-liter four-cylinder one of the most powerful four-pots currently on the market and only a little less powerful than the engine found in the A45, CLA45 and GLA45. While FCA probably has the expertise and resources to make such an engine, debuting it in an off-roader like the Wrangler wouldn’t make much sense.

Whatever the final figure for the 2.0-liter ends up being, we know that the off-roader will also be sold with the brand’s familiar Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 delivering 285 hp.

Stay tuned to hear more about the 2018 Wrangler from its public debut at the LA Auto Show later this year.
