Television host, comedian, and radio personality Adam Carolla has some incredible vehicles, like a ’68 Lamborghini Islero that he brought over to Jay Leno’s garage. Carolla has sold and bought some rare vehicles before, but now he’s getting rid of another vintage car: a 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL racer.
The ’72 3.0 CSL appeared on Classic Driver (via Road & Track) for an unnamed price. Seeing as an example without the massive rear wing and prominent front spoiler was estimated to go for between $91,000 and $104,000 last year, we guess Carolla’s car should fetch a little bit more.
The 3.0 CSL was a homologation special that was based on the 2800 CS platform. BMW used aluminum alloy, deleted some unnecessary parts and utilized thinner steel for the body to reduce weight. The engine was bored out to 3,003 cc and the aerodynamics of the vehicle were improved. At the end of the day, the 3.0 CSL lives up to its “Batmobile” nickname.
This particular BMW has an interesting history. The original owner transformed the vehicle to racing spec by a well-known racecar driver in Germany and then used it in various competitions. The 3.0 CSL was eventually sold to Cullen “Cuffy” Crabbe, an actor that starred in the television series “Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion.” Crabbe updated the vehicle to Group 2 specs, which included updating the engine, and raced the car in vintage events. Carolla eventually purchased the race-proven 3.0 CSL in 2011.
The ad claims that Carolla never had the opportunity to race the vehicle, but it has been “professionally maintained as part of his extensive collection of vintage racing cars.” The listing also states that the “car fires up reliably and runs strong.”
With the classic’s rich racing history and previous list of celebrity owners, it’ll be interesting to see how much it will eventually sell for.
