Like most major automakers, Nissan is hard at work developing advanced autonomous driving systems. However, unlike most others, it has used its free time to make pairs of self-parking slippers.
No, this isn’t an early April Fools’ joke, Nissan has actually provided an inn, located in the resort town of Hakone, with slippers equipped with the brand’s ProPilot Park technology.
Each slipper has two small wheels, a motor, and sensors that allow it to cruise around the floors and find the perfect place to ‘park’. Things don’t stop at self-parking slippers either.
Nissan has also created floor cushions and low tables that slide perfectly into place when the command is given. Mixing the old Japanese traditions with this new technology is certainly something that’ll raise your eyebrows.
Nissan is offering a free night of accommodation at the resort for two. All participants need to do is post on Twitter using the hashtags #PPPRyokan and #wanttostay between January 25 and February 10 to be entered into the competition.
According to Nissan spokesman Nick Maxfield, the self-parking slippers show what autonomous technologies can do.
“The self-parking slippers are meant to raise awareness of automated driving technologies, and their potential, non-driving applications,” he said.
Nissan intends on having a self-driving car on the market by 2020.
