There was a time when AMG models were still using the ‘Benz’ moniker, as Daimler hadn’t yet fully integrated the Afalterbach tuner into its lineup and, more importantly, hadn’t changed the naming process of its models. At the time, Mercedes had the CLS63 AMG as the range-topping version of its four-door coupe.

In the third-gen CLS the AMG 63 won’t make a comeback, as it has to make room for the upcoming AMG GT4. Instead, customers will have to settle for the 53 model with its 456hp coming from a hybridized 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine.

In the meantime, the old CLS63 AMGs continue to do well for themselves, often being raced by their owners on different occasions. The example shown on video below was filmed during a drag racing event in Germany, revving its engine and going down the strip very fast.

According to the description of the clip, this particular CLS features some work carried in the engine compartment, such as an updated ECU, new air filter and new downpipes. These apparently allow the 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 to produce an impressive 650 horsepower, or around 100hp more than the stock car equipped with the optional Performance Package.

With the extra grunt, it was able to reach a top speed of 265.56km/h (165.01mph) from a rolling start at 50km/h (31mph) after 1,000m (0.62 miles), which turned out to be a challenge for some of its contenders.
