Audi Is The First To Roll Out Vehicle-Integrated Toll Tech In The U.S.

Audi is expanding its vehicle-to-infrastructure technology while becoming the first automaker to launch an integrated toll payment system on select vehicles.

The so-called ITM (Integrated Toll Module) technology is built into the car’s rearview mirror, from where it can communicate with the outside environment, allowing access to toll roads not just in the U.S., but also in Canada and Mexico.

Drivers will be able to adjust the module’s settings through the car’s MMI infotainment system, where they can opt to either turn the ITM module on or off or change the occupant setting for HOV/HOT lanes.

The technology is said to be compatible with existing tolling agencies across the U.S. and can be registered with a driver’s current account, a new account or a nationwide tolling account. Tasked with developing the ITM was the Gentex Corporation, a supplier of automatic-dimming mirrors for all Audi vehicles.

At this point, the German automaker hasn’t revealed which models will be equipped with ITMs, although it’s a safe bet that all-new A8 owners will be among the first to benefit from this new technology.
