There are some cars out there that make absolutely no sense and are all the better for it. Take the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All Terrain 4×4², for example.
Unveiled last year, the E-Class All-Terrain 4×4² is a one-off and was dreamed up by company engineer Jurgen Eberle.
Matthias Malmedie, a particularly popular German presenter, was recently handed the keys to the crazy off-roader. He was more than impressed.
If you don’t speak German, you’ll have to watch the video below with subtitles. Nevertheless, the imagery provides you with an excellent idea of just how capable the E-Class 4×4² is in tricky conditions. Sure, it’s no G63 6×6 or G500 4×4², but it isn’t far behind.
The key reason for the vehicle’s off-road prowess are the portal axles which have been fitted. These special axles increase the ride height by 16-inches and have been paired with 31-inch tires. The track of the E-Class has also been widened by 8 inches. Unlike the G63 6×6 and G500 4×4² however, the E-Class doesn’t have a low range gearbox or locking differentials.
Power is provided by a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 delivering 328 hp.
